Twelve colleagues from Clarion Partners' New York office assisted in park preservation and cleanup with environmental nonprofit GrowNYC as part of the Firm's efforts to support and improve the communities where we work and live.
For the fourth time, employees volunteered on Governor's Island in an effort to ensure that this evolving jewel of the city can continue to surprise and delight its many visitors and users. Once used as a military base, the Island, reachable only by ferry, has been redeveloped into a large educational and recreational center that provides increased access to nature, outdoor relaxation, and exploration in the nation's largest urban environment.
The group spent the morning hand-weeding the 3,100+ square feet Liggett Terrace Plaza area, which hosts outdoor seating behind Liggett Hall for nearby food trucks.
A large new area of the Island is being developed by the City and Stony Brook University as The New York Climate Exchange, which will feature, among other elements, an interactive 400,000 square foot laboratory with research labs, classroom space, exhibits, greenhouses, mitigation technologies, and housing facilities to prepare students for careers focused on climate change solutions and environmental justice.
